Departure Bay
The feel of the place
Leafy streets, mid-century homes, and the ferry terminal right there — which sounds like it'd be loud but genuinely isn't once you're a block off Stewart Ave. Departure Bay is where a lot of my Vancouver clients end up, because they want water access, a real yard, and a 10-minute walk to the ferry for weekend trips back to the mainland.
Best for
- Commuters doing the weekly ferry run to Vancouver
- Families wanting a yard + beach access
- Boaters — marina + launch on your side of town
Worth knowing
- Kenmore–Stewart corridor gets ferry-offload traffic 4x/day
- Some older septic systems in the north end — worth checking
- Popular area; homes move quickly in spring
What to know
Schools, groceries, commute — the practical stuff.
Schools
Departure Bay Elementary is the local jewel. Secondary: Dover Bay (highly rated).
Groceries
Quality Foods in Brooks Landing + a very good specialty butcher. Costco is 10 minutes.
Commute
BC Ferries terminal in-area (the ferry to Horseshoe Bay loads here, 100 min crossing). Helijet harbour: 8 min.
Beaches
Departure Bay Beach is a local favourite — long sandy stretch, protected swimming.
