Harewood
The feel of the place
Harewood sits just south of downtown, wrapped around Vancouver Island University. Mix of older family homes, student rentals, and a lot of renovation potential. Real-estate-wise, it's one of the last reasonable entry points to Nanaimo — and the one I recommend most often to people who want to build equity by improving a home.
Best for
- First-time buyers willing to renovate
- Investors — VIU student rentals are nearly recession-proof
- Walkers who want a 15-minute stroll to downtown
Worth knowing
- Street parking competition during the school year
- Condition varies — budget for a thorough inspection
- Some blocks are entirely student rentals; drive at 9pm
